Understanding Effective Home Alarm Systems

!±8± Understanding Effective Home Alarm Systems

Home security can be greatly enhanced with effective home alarm systems. However, not everyone is aware of what the best features consist of. Here is a discussion on which features can provide maximum security and safety.

Sensing Movement

Protection from break-in by intruders should be as complete as possible. This is important, whether you are home or away. A really good feature to have is motion sensing. Your home will be armed with motion sensors in several areas of the house. If there are any movements, it will trigger a siren or buzzer of some kind. If you are signed up with a home security service, it will notify the service automatically.

Downside of Motion Sensing

There is the possibility of false alarms. This can happen if you have pets in the home. Motion sensors are effective, only when nobody is home, or unless everyone is asleep. If you forget and get up in the night, you may trigger the motion sensor program. Motion sensing is very secure, but it will depend on your situation.

Windows and Doors

Two of the most common ways to enter a home are the windows and doors. Some modern systems will trigger a siren if a window or door is opened. It will also work if someone breaks or shatters the window, to get in. This can give very good security if all doors and windows are monitored.

The Right Service

Alarm systems are only as good as the service that comes with them. The most secure system will contact a security service, which will contact local law enforcement. Look for a service that has experience and check into references. Research as much as you can, before you decide.

Other Features

It is also very important to have fire and carbon monoxide protection. These sensors can save many lives if they are used properly. If your security monitoring service does not provide them, make sure that you at least invest in smoke detectors. They should be battery operated, in case of a power loss or electrical fire. Carbon monoxide detectors are important if you have any gas appliances or anything that burns fuel. They will let you know when the air is unsafe to breathe, before it is too late. Battery operated CO3 detectors will be the most secure.

Some building and council authorities will insist on smoke alarms being connected to a mains power supply. The logic here is that although batteries may not fail in a power outage, the risk of the property owner or tenant not replacing a dead battery is greater than a mains powered smoke alarm not working during a power outage!

Summary

Effective home alarm systems may have motion control, but under specific circumstances. They must have break-in protection for all windows and doors. Your security is only as good as the service that backs it up, so make sure that they are dependable and reputable. Do not forget to invest in smoke and CO3 detectors, and battery operated devices are the most secure. They will protect you in case of power failure.
